Of course the above are all open for interpretation. I am always hovering between modern times and the 18th century, so equipment is constantly being changed around.
The most important thing is to test your equipment out - in the woods - and as it would be used. If you aren't comfortable sleeping under a tarp, bring your tent out and set-up both. That way, if you start out sleeping under the tarp and hate it, you can just go back to the tent.
