Vegetarian: ancient Indian word for poor hunter. - From a bumper sticker
Hunting is one of the few things that we can do in modern times that really ties us directly to our ancestors. Add in some primitive weapons and you are a modern caveman. Being able to go out into the woods, track and harvest your game, and then feed your family are some of the most basic and essential skills of survival. Even if you are opposed to it - it is the hunting abilities of your ancestors that allowed you to be alive today.
While I am not a fan of hunting purely for sport or trophy hunting, I have no problem with those who are. Deer and wild hogs, the two primary animals I hunt in Texas, are both seriously overpopulated. In fact, every sport hunter in Texas could shoot their limit and we'd still need to be actively involved in conservation to make sure the herds were at a practical carrying capacity for the land.
Besides that - hunting is a great way for father and son to connect. It is a Texas tradition.
Ethical hunters are always conservation minded. In fact, President Teddy Roosevelt, an avid hunter and outdoorsman, also founded the National Parks service in order to preserve national lands for future generations.
